What is a petticoat?
The tutu skirt or petticoat is made of tulle. This fine mesh fabric is usually made of nylon. This makes it a very light fabric. The petticoat skirt seems very heavy because of the many layers of fabric, but in reality that is not the case at all. This makes this skirt easy to wear under an existing outfit. But it is of course also possible to wear the petticoat for women as a skirt. Nowadays many little girls walk around in a beautiful petticoat, but this garment is of course also suitable for adults.
Where does a petticoat come from?
The petticoat was already worn by women of nobility in the 16th century. In combination with a tightly laced corset, it accentuated the waist of the lady in question. The real breakthrough of the petticoat came in the 1950s by fashion designer Christian Dior. He had the petticoat appear frequently in his collection.
The petticoat has been worn by women as an underskirt since the 1950s. The first generation of petticoats was made of wool and starched cotton, only later did they switch to nylon. In addition, in the world of ballerinas, a tutu usually means an outfit that consists of a skirt, a basque and a tight-fitting bodice. The petticoat is therefore part of a tutu in this explanation.
