Symbols for Oeteldonk
The tricolour or the red-white-yellow flag originates from the beginning of the 20th century. These three colours come from the church (white and yellow), and the beautiful Brabant flag (red and white). The authentic costume (for men) is a nice farmer's smock with a red-white-yellow scarf and matching black farmer's cap and possibly a red farmer's handkerchief, and white gloves. Every year a new 'annual emblem' is designed, which contains the annual theme and can be sewn onto everyone's farmer's smock or carnival costume. They also have their own coat of arms here. This is depicted on the banner. The (green) frog is a very common symbol during Carnival in this area. Contrary to what many people think, the frog is not a reference to the word 'Oetel' in Oeteldonk, but more the symbol for the swamp. Oetel is not a synonym for frog from Den Dungen. Van den Oetelaar was a very common surname in Den Dungen at that time. Oetel is the swamp.
