Make your own Santa Claus miter: simple step-by-step plan + styling tips

  • 2 min reading time

A Saint Nicholas miter is a breeze to make. With sturdy red material, a gold border, and the signature cross, you can create a classic version. Or get creative with glitter and a panther for a fun twist. Below, you'll find practical step-by-step instructions and styling tips to complete your Saint Nicholas look.

Supplies

  • Red sturdy paper, foam or felt (A3 works well for adults, A4 for kids)
  • Gold colored paper, ribbon or glitter tape
  • Cardboard (for stability), pencil and ruler
  • Scissors, glue (or glue gun) and double-sided tape
  • Stapler (optional, for an extra strong seal)
  • Extra decoration: glitter stones , stickers, feathers or mini LEDs

Step-by-step plan

  1. Measure and draw the base
Measure the head circumference. On red material, draw a wide band that fits all the way around, with two rounded points at the top (the "ears" of the miter). For children, a circumference of approximately 55–58 cm is often sufficient; for adults, approximately 58–62 cm.
  2. Reinforce with cardboard
Glue the red shape onto a cardboard template of the same size. This will keep the miter upright and prevent wrinkling.
  3. Apply the gold border
Cut narrow strips of gold paper or use glitter tape. Trace the outer edge, leaving 1–2 cm at the bottom for the headband.
  4. Place the cross
Cut a symmetrical cross from gold paper (the vertical bar should be approximately 60–70% of the miter height). Glue it to the center of the front. Tip: Use metallic or glitter for added depth.
  5. Close and adjust
Form the band around your head and secure with double-sided tape or staples. Leave the inside smooth for comfort. Test the fit and adjust as needed.
  6. Finish and personalize
Add initials, small stones, or a narrow second gold border. For a "cheesy" miter, you can use leopard accents or mini LEDs.

Variations

  • Classic : matte red with a sleek gold edge and a simple cross.
  • Glitter : sequin ribbon along the edge and a shiny cross.
  • Mini miter : smaller version on a headband for children or parties.
  • Bad miter : leopard print details, extra shine and over-the-top rhinestones.

Outfit combinations

Complete your look with a cloak, gloves, and a staff. Choose a classic or playful party look, depending on your event.

Shopping tips

Pro tip: Make multiple miters at once using a cardboard template. Let everyone choose their own gold accents and initials for a fun crafting afternoon.
